When Ken Goldberg left Wall Street, he never thought he would be working in the medical field, but he wanted to have his own business. In 2014, he became the owner of a franchise location of AFC Urgent Care located on Main Avenue near the Norwalk DMV. AFC Urgent Care’s parent company, American Family Care, is one of the largest urgent care businesses in the US with 163 locations and growing.
Now celebrating one year open, Goldberg attributes the growth of urgent care facilities like his, due to the increasing need for quality health care services that are also convenient and affordable. “These days, places like AFC Urgent Care are top-notch facilities with state-of-the art equipment.”
When Goldberg first opened the center, it was called AFC Doctor’s Express, but the name was recently changed to AFC Urgent Care in order to improve the national name recognition. The facility has 5 exam rooms, a procedure room, and an x-ray room. The physicians are board certified, and typically their backgrounds are in family medicine, internal medicine, and possibly emergency medicine. He wanted to know that they were comfortable treating patients from ages 2 to 92. When needed, the center makes referrals to local specialists for follow-up like orthopedists for broken bones.
“We are open 7 days a week with extended hours 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and until 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. People can walk in without an appointment, and have a doctor look at them for all types of minor illnesses and injuries,” Goldberg says.
AFC Urgent Care can do physicals for both kids and adults, including DOT and immigration. Many businesses require a physical for new employees. The center can also perform drug testing and workers compensation exams, as well as vaccinations. Since there are fewer primary care physicians, people often have to wait longer for an appointment. “We like to make it easier. People can call ahead and make an appointment, but can also always just walk in,”
Goldberg states. “We are excited to be a part of the local communities. We want AFC to be able to keep our families healthy and provide a more efficient alternative to the emergency room. We typically are less expensive, and we take almost all insurance plans.”
Beyond providing convenient, fast non-emergency medical services, AFC Urgent Care is a neighborhood health resource, and an integral part of the community. It is active in the local chambers of commerce, hosts educational fairs, conducts outreach to schools, supports community events, and promotes health and wellness through preventative care.
