Perhaps, like me, you made your New Year’s resolutions some nine months ago, promising to find renewed health and energy in the coming year. Maybe one of those resolutions included becoming more fit, eating better or taking better care of yourself. Perhaps some of your New Year’s resolutions (like mine!) have fallen to the wayside.
“As long as you’re breathing, it’s never too late to do some good,” Maya Angelou said. Last I checked, I’m still breathing. Time to do some good.
From hot yoga and CrossFit® to Tai Chi and deep-tissue massage, there’s no end to the options available for someone wanting to look and feel better. You might automatically think “gym membership,” but there’s a growing trend toward more health and wellness services where the mind-body connection is paramount … where wellness is a way of life.
According to ActiveBeat.com, one of the most popular health and wellness trends this year has been the “all inclusive wellness studio … where open-minded people are looking to live an all-encompassing healthy lifestyle.” The good news is that you don’t have to travel far to find a wellness studio or day spa that offers a variety of health/wellness services and alternative therapies that can be tailor-made to your needs.
Cindy Ziegler, director of Halo Studios (halostudios.com) in New Canaan, explains, “We are a wellness center, which is a unique, new concept. Halo Studios houses a variety of independent fitness, wellness and health services all under one roof. The idea is that you can achieve your best self — and a state of well-being — all in one place.”
Ziegler adds, “People want to pursue a state of overall well-being now, not just being fit or being healthy. I see a lot of clients adding variety to their regular workout routines. Someone may come into Halo five days a week, but rather than running on a treadmill every single day, they might bike in our fitness center one day, take a yoga or Pilates class another, or get a massage. Yoga and Pilates continue to be very popular, as we see a continuing trend toward a partnering of mind and movement.”
Often, the best part of doing something for yourself is that you don’t need to do it alone. Lanphier Day Spa & Salon (lanphierdayspa.com) in Darien, for example, offers coaching, another health and wellness trend, according to Gabriele Gavrielidis, who is responsible for marketing and branding for the company.
At Lanphier “we offer a variety of wellness and beauty programs including health and wellness coaching. We educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through nutrition, lifestyle and behavior adjustments by taking a holistic approach to tailor a wellness program that meets their individual needs,” Gavrielidis says.
Gavrielidis also sees medical aesthetics as another big trend as people steer towards the most effective treatments. “We offer the key to optimal skin health, which is a skincare professional. By combining a customized at-home regimen with powerful in-office treatments and targeted skincare solutions, the result is healthier skin. We now have an entire division devoted to medical aesthetics, run by Dr. Scott Herman, MD, a board-certified internist with extensive training in laser physics, laser and pulsed-light modalities, injection science and medical aesthetics. The newly added Skin Ceuticals professional chemical peels are also trending right now.”
Julia Ambrosi, manager for Williams & Company, LLC, Body and Skin Care (williamsandcompany.md) in Darien, also emphasizes proper skincare and its importance in our overall health and wellness. “We have massage therapists, as well as physiotherapists, for overall care of the body,” she states. “Our clients are interested in doing the best for their body and skin while hoping to avoid surgical and/or laser treatments. Our HYDRAFACIAL system is a medical-grade facial resurfacing treatment, four grades higher than microdermabrasion and is effective for all skin types. This system provides instant results with no down time and actually improves the health of your skin while helping with fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, hyperpigmentation and photo damage and enlarged pores.”
Tranquility Mind & Body Wellness Spa™ (tranquilwellnessspa.com) in Milford is a wellness center and spa focused on transforming the mind, body and spirit, and offers a wide variety of massages, facials, and body treatments. “We also offer an excellent array of classes including yoga, pilates, cardio and resistance classes for every age and ability,” explains Lauren Kaszuba, manager. “Our Massage Membership program is also an excellent way to take care of both your mind and your body. Getting a massage regularly can play a big part in how healthy and youthful you will be with each passing year.”
With New Year’s, and inevitably a new list of resolutions, just three months away, it’s not about starting again…it’s about the starting!
